Skipping Breakfast and Lunch - A BIG NO NO

I am sure many of my friends skip lunch, at least most of the people I know do so. I recently read an article and according to that, it is very unhealthy to skip breakfast and lunch. In fact, it says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Having breakfast in the morning is the key to perform better physical ad mental activity. People who have a healthy breakfast are able to maintain a more healthier weight than those who do not. And I feel this all makes sense! Since, if you skip breakfast, you keep feeling hungry all day and eventually end up gorging food when its time for dinner!

I never miss breakfast, and the day I do, I literally can not stand on my feet! I think this is all because of my mother, who has spoilt me as people say (:P), but I believe its more like a good eating habit. So, now when I am here in the US, away from home and all my luxuries of just sitting on the dining table ready to eat food, I have to cook my own breakfast and being a graduate student, I definitely do not have the time to cook a royal breakfast :P, but I got some ideas for a quick and almost healthy breakfast. So here are some of my breakfast ideas :

IDEA 1: Cereals!! ( Easy and healthy!)
IDEA 2 : A glass of milk ( with Nesquick :D) and toasted bread slice with a turkey slice and a cheese slice and an orange.
IDEA 3: Toast and Omelet. I don't think there is anyone who does not know how quick it is to make an omelet!
IDEA 4: Banana and glass of milk.
IDEA5: Bagel with cream cheese
IDEA 6: Toast and peanut butter
IDEA 7: Boiled eggs
Keep suggesting ideas, I really want to increase this list :)

Also, keep this is mind that having breakfast might make you hungry earlier in the day, this only means that your metabolism has been stimulated and you body needs more food. So, wait till its time for lunch. And yes, skipping lunch is also unhealthy. You need lunch to feel good and all afternoon. I will post more health benefits of having lunch and some cool and quick lunch recipes.

It's very easy for vegetarians to buy a box of hummus or vegan chicken salad (contains soy) and keep eating that with whole wheat bread.

My roommate usually eats bread with last night's stir fry.. she likes it so much! Another roommate directly has some spinach dal!! LOL

Good post!

Very good post... breakfast is really important do you know that people who eat breakfast tends to have less or no cavities compared to people who don't eat.

well how about this ???
BREAKFAST BAGEL:

2 whole wheat bagels
4 large free-range chicken eggs
1 tsp apple cider vinegar or any light vinegar
1 large tomato, sliced
1 bunch arugula
2 TBS extra virgin olive oil
2 medium cloves garlic, pressed
Salt and black pepper to taste
Directions:
1.Bring water and 1 tsp vinegar to a light boil in a shallow pan. Make sure there is enough water to cover eggs.
2.While water is coming to a boil, slice bagels in half and toast. Press garlic into oil and brush on cut side of toasted bagels.
3.Garnish bagel with arugula and sliced tomato.
4.To poach eggs, crack into water and cook about 5 minutes, just until the white is set and the yolk has filmed over. Remove with slotted spoon. Place on top of bagel and vegetables. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve open faced.

I never support skipping any meal. If you have a heavy breakfast, then definitely you have a lighter lunch, for example salad or fruits. Also, I am talking about a healthy breakfast, its quit obvious that Pizza id not one of them!! Yea but idlis is def nice!

I tested with me about your advice. Actually I felt much better all the morning and the rest of the day when I didn't skip breakfast.

I lost 25-30 pounds 7 years ago, and have kept the weight off. But the fact that I've succeeded where most people fail doesn't stop the "experts" from scolding me for daring to buck conventional wisdom.

I don't eat breakfast.
I don't eat lunch.
I don't swallow the claims that this is bad for my health.

Many people prefer to scold than stopping to consider something that may help them. But doesn’t my success in an area dominated by soul-crushing failure indicate you should consider my points?
My own story of weight loss is, of course, anecdotal, so how about some research that supports my claims: first, Dr. David Levitsky, professor of nutrition at Cornell, conducted a controlled study where subjects skipped breakfast. They ate more than they usually would at lunch, but not enough to make up the difference. There was a net loss in caloric intake. Dr. Mark Mattson of the National Institute of Aging had subjects skip breakfast and lunch, then had them a prescribed, full day’s allotment of calories worth at dinner. They neither gained nor lost weight, but his opinion was that if left on their own they’d eat less for dinner. That’s my experience. Exercise discipline and don’t eat junk-food (except occasionally), and you won’t eat more throughout the course of the day. Just make sure you have a good selection of assorted, nutritious foods for your one meal.
As for metabolism: one’s basal-rate of metabolism never stops, but it does decrease while sleeping. It’s true that eating can increase it – through what’s called thermogenesis – but then so can drinking a glass of cold water.
My routine is tough at first to get used to, but I think many can relate to how you get into a “zone” where you just don’t feel hungry. Today I ran 11 miles/17.7K on an empty stomach (btw- I’m not lying; I have better things to do than misrepresent myself on an internet forum). When I finished at about 1, I had plenty of fluids, but no food. Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard it all about how “bad” that is for you. Talk to the hand. I’m right on this; I’m TELLING you. I’m not going to claim it’s the ONLY way to lose weight, but long-term success stories are rare, so I’m clearly doing something right. And I feel utterly confident that the “Breakfast is the most important meal” canard will be revised, as part of ongoing scientific inquiry, in due course.

My comment was copied and pasted from a response I made over the weekend, hence the reference to finishing a run at 1 o'clock. That was obviously not today.

Whatever works for you Cameron. I am not that crazy about dieting. I just prefer to live a normal life :) I am 120 pounds and really not trying to lose weight , So, I guess my diet works for me. For me , breakfast is actually the fav part of the day and I Don't want to miss it and starve myself the whole day and feel bad about life and then irritate myself.Take it easy!

All the Best.
